They Never Gave Up

Many of the world's biggest successes overcame repeated failures before they succeeded. Consider these examples:

R.H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New York caught on.

Novelist John Creasey got 753 rejection slips before he published the first of his 564 books.

Thomas Edison was thrown out of school in the early grades when the teachers decided he couldn't do the work.

President Harry S. Truman went broke in the men's clothing store he started.

When Bob Dylan performed at a high school talent show, his classmates booed him off the stage.

W. Clement Stone, successful insurance company executive and founder of Success magazine, was a high school dropout.

BIOLOGIX

FOCUS May 2010

Notes From Dr.Lee

Dear Colleagues,

As we approach mid year of the Biologix 10 year anniversary year, I can't help but think back and realize how far we have come from the start-up company we once were. Many things have changed from the office we work in, to the manufacturing plants in which we manufacture all of our great Biologix products, and last but not least, the expanded offering of new products!

Two things that we have proudly left unchanged are 1) our desires to maintain a “small company” feel yet with big market reach and demand, and 2) our extremely competitive pricing. We have kept the personal touch, as well as flexibility that matters most to our customers, all the while finding ways to even enhance those characteristics. From the many surveys we have conducted, we have found that most of our customers are appreciative of customer service efforts and overall supportive and positive attitude in helping to provide you the lab supplies you and your customers need. Majority of our survey responses have also confirmed that Biologix often is the best priced among your other manufacturers. We have strived to create this image, and thank you for recognizing our efforts.

The product line Biologix began with, still to this day remains our strongest product line: The Centrifuge Tubes. The plug seal centrifuge tubes, to be specific, were the basis on which this company has grown to be what it is today. We still have very many loyal customers who have stuck with Biologix over the years. Let me personally tell you that your loyalty means more to us than I could ever express. Thank you, and thank you for growing with Biologix!

Sincerely,

Winston Lee

Seven Qualities Great Leaders Possess

Do you have what it takes to be an effective leader? Experts have noticed seven specific actions that most successful leaders carry out, regardless of the organization or cause they lead:

Make others feel important. If your goals and decisions are self-centered, followers will lose their enthusiasm quickly. Emphasize their strengths and contributions instead of your own.

Promote a vision. Followers need a clear idea of where you're leading them, and they need to understand why that goal is valuable to them. Your job as a leader is to provide that vision.

Follow the Golden Rule. Treat your followers the way you enjoy being treated. An abusive leader attracts few loyal followers.

Admit mistakes. If people suspect that you're covering up your own errors, they'll hide their mistakes, too, and you'll lack valuable information for making decisions.

Criticize others only in private. Public praise encourages others to excel, but public criticism only embarrasses and alienates everyone.

Stay close to the action. You need to be visible to the members of your organization. Talk to people, visit other offices and work sites, ask questions, and observe how employees handle their business. Often you'll gain new insights into your work and find new opportunities for motivating your followers.

Make a game of competition. The competitive drive can be a valuable tool if you use it correctly. Set team goals and reward those who meet or exceed them. Examine your failures and celebrate your groups' successes.

How To Remember Names

Are you one of those people who says, “I'm not good at remembering names,” as though it were a character trait? You're not alone. Here are a few tips to help you eliminate “what's-his-name” from your vocabulary forever:

Be interested. Many of us don't even catch other people's names when they're introduced because we're too focused on ourselves. So the first step to remembering a name is to pay attention as you're introduced.

Want to remember. Focus on remembering. This change of attitude and intention will, by itself, greatly increase your awareness and thus your ability.

Slow down. Take time with each person and look them in the eyes. Notice something distinctive about the person, especially their face. And speaking of faces…

Picture it written on their forehead. Franklin Roosevelt continually amazed his staff by remembering the names of nearly everyone he met. His secret? He used to imagine seeing the name written across the person's forehead. This is a particularly powerful technique if you visualize the name written in your favorite color of Magic Marker.

Say it aloud. After you hear their name, say it aloud, and then use the first name occasionally during your conversation with the person. “Hi, Jim, nice to meet you. So, what do you do for a living, Jim?” or “Do you have any kids, Jim? Jim, it was great to meet you!

Delete “I'm not good at remembering names” from your brain. Let go of this limiting belief and install a new belief: “I'm getting better at remembering names.”

Change your thoughts and you change your world.

Leaders aren’t born; they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through
hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.
– Vince Lombardi

The world is full of willing people. Some willing to work, the rest are willing to
let them.
