Could You Save A Life?

Many people know what to do when somebody sprains an ankle or nicks himself with a razor or knife. But First Aid is not just knowing about bandages and CPR; it's about knowing when to do what .

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about First Aid:

When do you call an ambulance? When there's even the slightest doubt, call 9-1-1. It's better to be safe than sorry. Until help arrives, stay calm and reassure the victim. If the victim has not hurt his back, neck or doesn't have a broken bone, reposition him so he can keep an open airway for breathing.

Learn the procedure to dislodge an item caught in somebody's throat, otherwise known as the Heimlich maneuver.

If your child has drunk something poisonous, call the Poison Control Center and describe the product that was swallowed. Do not induce vomiting. Some poisons, like abrasive cleaners, can actually do more harm than good to the victim during vomiting. If you have to induce vomiting, use ipecac syrup. It often helps.

For a cut, apply pressure to the wound with a clean, thick cloth and elevate the wounded area above the victim's heart.

Treat a burn by running cool water over the injured skin until the area is pain-free both in and out of water. Wash minor first- and second-degree burns with mild soap and apply antibiotic ointment.

“Sleeper-Inners” Are Happier

If you're among those who repeatedly hit the snooze button on the alarm clock, just ignore all the slacker barbs. Studies show that people who push for the extra few minutes of sleep can have lower stress levels.

A study by Westminster University in London found that people who wake later have lower levels of cortisol – the body's main stress hormone. In general, cortisol levels rise 15 to 20 minutes after a person undergoes a stressful situation. Some studies have found that prolonged exposure to high levels of the hormone can put you at risk for bone-mass loss, depression and brain degeneration.

The study found that people who woke at earlier hours, say 5:30am, had higher concentrations of cortisol during the first 45 minutes of their day. The study also found that cortisol levels are not necessarily affected by how much sleep you get, but by the hour you wake. The later the hour, the better. This doesn't mean that you have to sleep in until 10am to see any benefits. Adding just 20 to 30 minutes more to your regular routine can help you feel more relaxed during the rest of the day.

Hello?

A young entrepreneur had just started his own company. He opened a beautiful office and furnished it with antiques. On the first day, he saw a man enter the outer office. Wanting to give the impression of a hotshot businessman, the young man picked up the phone and pretended to be working out a big deal. He threw around huge figures and made grand pronouncements. He finally hung up and asked the waiting man, “May I help you?” To which the man replied, “Yeah, I've come here to activate your phone lines.”
